For the past thirty years, every day, in Gigny, a little village of Yonne, the first house to light up is always the same. At 6AM, Michel Tobiet is up for milking. Until when? He is the last livestock farmer of the village. At the entrance of his farm, red letters on a large panel read: “Tomorrow, the end of milk: tomorrow, hunger for milk”. In two years, the exchange rate has taken quite a blow: 300€/ton for a factory price of 260€. The margin is too small and condemns farmers to poverty. More and more of them are demanding an active cooperative revenue. Two brothers in the trade have recently hung themselves, drawing comparaisons to the wave of suicides that have run rampant in this field in Western France.
